Standards and tolerances for CNC cutting and milling

The defaults we apply unless your drawing or quote says otherwise. Anything else is agreed in the quote.

Machine and sheet size

  • Working area 2070 × 4000 mm, 3-axis CNC router with vacuum hold-down. The working area is not the maximum part size: we check each part against the drawing.
  • We do not offer 5-axis machining. For complex shapes we assess jigs and several setups; feasibility is confirmed in the quote.

Tolerance

  • Default cutting tolerance ±0.5 mm on plywood, MDF and plastics, comparable to ISO 2768-1 class m for nominal sizes over 120 up to 400 mm. The standard comes from metalworking and this is not a declaration of conformity; on parts under 120 mm our ±0.5 mm is looser than class m. The tolerance applies to the outline in plan; pocket depth follows the actual sheet thickness. Tighter tolerances on request, after we assess the part.
  • Plywood and MDF are wood-based materials and change size with humidity. If a long part needs a fixed size, tell us the service environment and we will advise.
  • If a part is out of tolerance. If a part we cut ends up more than ±0.5 mm off the agreed drawing because of us, we repair it, remake it, reduce the price or refund, as set out in clause 2.8 of our terms. This applies to plywood, MDF and plastics. Business customers report visible defects within 7 days of delivery, and hidden ones within a reasonable time of finding them, with photos.
  • Not covered: nominal sheet thickness, errors in files you send, changes from humidity or temperature outside normal indoor conditions, changes made after delivery, and deviations caused by client-supplied material. Your statutory consumer rights are not limited.

Inner corners

  • A round cutter cannot make a sharp inner corner: every inner corner takes the cutter radius. Smallest inner radius r2 (2 mm); smaller is possible depending on material and thickness. Slots for joints are normally cut with a 6 mm cutter, so the inner radius there is 3 mm.
  • For parts that lock into each other, relief cuts (dogbones) or rounded mating corners are needed; we advise on this in the manufacturing notes with your quote. See the file preparation guide.

Materials and thicknesses

MaterialThickness, mm
Birch plywood6.5–30 (6.5, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30)
Film-faced plywood9–18
MDFmostly 16–25; other thicknesses on request
PC, PMMA, PETG3–8; thicker by arrangement

Thickness is nominal: real sheet thickness varies, so check slot and tab fits against the actual sheet. Other materials are listed in the materials catalog; thickness is confirmed in the quote.

Files

  • Accepted: DXF, STEP, DWG, AI, SVG, CDR, F3D, 3MF, STL and PDF drawings. A sketch or a photo of a hand drawing is enough to start.
  • Flat parts: millimetres, scale 1:1, every shape closed, no duplicate lines, text converted to curves, parts drawn separately rather than nested on a sheet. Details are in the file preparation guide.
  • Every quote comes with free manufacturing notes on your drawing, whether or not you order.

Order, price and lead time

  • Minimum order 100 EUR for the whole order, excluding VAT and delivery. Shipments outside Estonia have a separate logistics threshold of 150 EUR. Neither applies to CAD packages and CAD work (CAD service).
  • Typical lead time 2–5 weeks from confirmation to dispatch, depending on workshop load. Rush work within a week is possible at a surcharge.
  • Published rates: CNC machine time 60 EUR/h with CAM programming included; a whole sheet nested and cut from 30 EUR (machine work, material not included), typically 60–80 EUR for a sheet of shaped parts; CAD work 75 EUR/h. Prices exclude VAT: 24% Estonian VAT is added for private customers and Estonian businesses; EU businesses with a valid VAT number are invoiced at 0% under reverse charge.

Packaging and delivery

  • Packing and palletising are quoted separately. Parts are wrapped in stretch film and cardboard, with cardboard corner protectors; pallet shipments usually go on plastic pallets. Crates are quoted separately.
  • Parcel delivery starts at 30 EUR across Estonia and the EU. We can ship straight to your customer under your brand. Pickup at the workshop is free.

Send a drawing, model or sketch to hello@cutlab.ee. A quote usually comes within one working day.
